Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions regarding this site or its contents please feel free to email the webmaster

Q. Why do I need to select a location to view information?

A. All the information contained with the local pages is filtered, so users will only see information relevant to their location.  This does not mean you can't click on another location to see what is going on in other locations!

Q. Why doesn't my village appear in the location list?

A. The location list shows the sections set out in the NHW structure.  To find out which section your village comes under, go to the Local Information page.  From here you will be able to click on 'areas covered by...' at the bottom (if you have selected a location) or if you have Flash Player installed, you can roll over a map, before you select a location, and the areas covered are shown (select 'choose a location' to clear your selection).  To read more about Flash Player, go to the accessibility page)

Q. Can I add an event to the Events page?

A. Yes!  To add an event to the Events page, simply contact your local Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer with the details.  We will create a banner graphic and add it to the site.

Q. How do I add articles to my section's newsletter?

A. This is done in the same way as adding an Event (see above).  Articles can be about anything you think is relevant to Neighbourhood Watch and can include pictures, pdf, tables etc.  See below to see how the newsletters are structured!

Q. How does the newsletter work?

A. The newsletters are articles based.  This means that all the articles are stored in a database and are given a 'zone'.  This zone could be a section (eg. Chippenham), a district, (eg. North Wilts), a division (eg. North & West Wilts) or the whole county.

The newsletter page takes the location you have selected and shows all articles relevant to that location - eg. if you select Chippenham, you will see all articles for the zone Chippenham, North Wilts, North & west Wilts and the whole county.  To see more information about the Neighbourhood Watch structure, see the Association pages.

There are several reasons for this structure.  Articles which would normally only be seen by a small section of the community, can be seen by everyone who will find it relevant;  Best practice can be shared across the NHW community;  Police officers can include articles which cover all relevant people, without having to individually contact each newsletter editor;  Printing costs for schemes are reduced, as online versions can be read, but a printable version is still available for people without computers or internet access.

Q. How can I enlarge the font size of the printed newsletter?

A. Simply enlarge your browser font size.  To see how to do this, go to the accessibility page.

Q. What can I expect to see in the future on the Local pages?

A. Much more localised information.  As more and more schemes become aware of the new facilities, more information will be included.  Every scheme has been allocated a scheme code and password, so you will be able to send information to just your scheme members.

Q. What sort of things go on the Campaigns page?

A. At the moment, the campaigns shown are mostly Police and Crime Reduction partnership campaigns.  If your scheme or local community are trying to stamp out graffitior run a 'phone a friend' scheme, these are all the sort of thing you could promote.
